Hotel Monaco Portland, a historic downtown Portland, Oregon, hotel
Hotel Monaco: A Historic Hotel in Portland, Oregon.
Dating from 1912, Hotel Monaco Portland's building has a colorful and distinguished historic past that informs its vibrant style today.
Hotel Monaco, formerly the 5th Avenue Suites, opened its doors in downtown Portland, Oregon, in May 1996. After extensive renovation, the 1912 building that once housed the distinguished Lipman Wolfe Department Store and then the retailer Frederick & Nelson, became home to our 221-room historic Kimpton Hotel.
Our Portland architectural gem helps establish us a unique boutique hotel. Nearly all Hotel Monaco Portland guestrooms are 550-square-foot one-bedroom hotel suites featuring vibrant color and a whimsical style that accentuates our historic building in all the right ways. Soaring ceilings, picture windows and ceilings that mimic those of the original department store are in keeping with preserving Portland's rich heritage.
Also in keeping with our building's past are our luxury amenities and special touches. During the Lipman Wolfe heyday, an annual holiday celebration took place presided over by the Cinnamon Bear. Over the course of two weeks, the "Adventures of the Cinnamon Bear" unfolded over the airwaves of a local radio station - a tale that children throughout Portland eagerly listened to each evening. The children were then able to personally meet the Cinnamon Bear as he wandered the Lipman Wolfe Department Store, passing out his signature cookies.
In honor of this historic Portland tradition, a Cinnamon Bear "look-a-like" will be found nestled on your bed upon arrival (you can take him home with you for a minimal cost). This is just one of the special touches you will find throughout Hotel Monaco, where modern luxury combines with Portland history for a memorable traveling experience.
