Our Top 10 Tips for Traveling With Kids
Traveling can be a lot of fun, for both the big and little kid in all of us. Here are some of our top 10 tips for traveling with kids:
- Call in advance to check on available equipment like cribs, play pens and roll-away beds. Upon arrival, ask the concierge about kid's activities!
- Child-proof the room. Check that balcony doors and windows are locked and blind chords are not dangling. You may want to bring outlet covers.
- Have a realistic itinerary. Too many activities can tire out the kids and make them irritable, so take it slow and leave time to relax.
- Use transparent bags for packing small kids items. They're much easier to find when living from a suitcase.
- Get a waist pack so your hands are always free when stepping out of a car.
- Bring the basics. Have extra diapers, wipes and a first aid kin in the glove box.
- Bring a kids travel bag of playthings, but don't let them see it! They often want everything at once. If they're old enough to look at a map, highlight stops. Write the city name on a brown bag filled with a snack or small toy for when you reach the destination.
- Create a countdown calendar for the fridge to build excitement.
- Bring a new toy for the car or plane. Never underestimate the value of new loot to keep the kids occupied.
- Pack less... and less. Pack once, with an eye for items that do double or triple duty. Close your bags, open them later and take out even more stuff.
