Hotel Monaco Portland artfully reveals the local secrets of Portland, Oregon
Enjoy The Best Portland Coffee Just Outside Your Door
Portland has so much going on in the world of food and drink that it's hard to keep track. A fantastic new restaurant, bar or cart seems to open every other day, and we're all scrambling to keep up with which ones we think are the best of the best.
In addition to everything else, Portland is renowned for its coffee scene. Commonly known as Coffee City, USA, Portland showcases some of the best coffee in the world. So, it's no surprise that hundreds of coffee shops grace the city. From big box shops (Starbucks, Peet's, etc.), to local giants such as Stumptown and Kobo's, to small independently owned Portland cafes, our coffee cups runneth over.
Where do we like to get our buzz on? These are our top picks:
Located across the street from Hotel Monaco, Spella Caffè is a Portland coffee shop not to miss. Andrea Spella and his staff serve coffee with authentic Italian quality and flair. The espresso machine is lever operated, and you can trust your barista to calibrate the right pressure and timing to pull a perfect shot every time.
Spella Caffè's lattes are finely balanced to produce a strong meld of coffee and milk. The macchiatos are served in the traditional Italian style, with a "mark" of milk foam floating on the top of the shot. Spella Caffè also hand crafts a chai that is well worth waiting the minutes it takes to prepare.
For those with a sweet tooth, head straight for the affogato—an espresso shot poured over a scoop of gelato. It's the perfect meld of velvety smooth coffee, cream and sugar for a swoon-worthy afternoon pick-me-up.
The details: Spella Caffè is open Monday – Friday, 8 am to 3 pm. It's located across the street from Hotel Monaco at 520 SW 5th Avenue at SW Alder Street.
Billy Wilson, award-winning barista, imagined a place where multiple coffees from world-renowned roasters would be coaxed into stunningly perfect drinks by expert baristas. Located in the nearby Pearl District, in one of Portland's historic brick buildings, Barista is a true Portland destination.
Barista's approach is novel, and absolutely at home in Portland. Wilson's coffeehouse is all about top-notch coffee and it's ideal preparation—which includes a sunny attitude. You won't find a list of specialty drink concoctions here. Or smoothies. What you will find are the best coffee beans, roasted just right and prepared as they should be for a full-flavored buzz that may rewire how you think about coffee.
Wilson's concept for Barista is rooted in the idea of a brewpub. The house bean, Stumptown's Hairbender blend, shares billing with two other coffees "on tap" that rotate monthly. Each month brings a new bean, which enjoys a two-month run. So there's always something new to explore, and a familiar friend to revisit.
Barista is open Monday – Friday from 6 am to 6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 7 am to 6 pm. It is located at 539 NW 13th Avenue.
